The Short Version: We Do Not Collect Your Data
We do not collect, store, share, or sell any personal information from our users. Best Hike Day is designed as a simple, privacy-first utility tool. What happens on your device, stays on your device.
1. Zero Data Collection Policy
Welcome to Best Hike Day ("we", "our", or "us"). This Privacy Policy applies to our website www.besthikeday.com and any associated mobile applications (collectively, the "Service").
We are fully committed to your privacy and strictly adhere to global privacy laws including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
To comply with these laws in the strictest sense, our policy is simple: We do not collect any personal data — from anyone, at any time, for any reason.
2. How Our Features Work Without Data Collection
- Location Searches: When you search for a city or use the "My Location" button, your browser directly requests weather data from our third-party weather provider (OpenWeatherMap). We do not intercept, see, or log your location or search queries.
- Trail Finder: When you search for hiking trails, your browser communicates directly with the Google Maps and Google Places APIs. We do not store, log, or process your location or trail search queries on any server we control.
- Unit Preferences: If you toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius or Imperial and Metric, that preference is saved locally in your own browser's
localStorage. It is never sent to our servers. - Accounts & Logins: We do not have user accounts, passwords, or profiles. There is nothing to hack, leak, or steal.
- Cookies: We do not set any first-party cookies. Third-party services (see Section 3) may set their own cookies subject to their own policies.
3. Third-Party Services
While we do not collect data ourselves, our website relies on a few essential third-party services to function. These services have their own privacy policies and may process data independently:
- OpenWeatherMap: Provides the raw weather forecast data. When you search for a location, your browser communicates directly with their API. (OpenWeatherMap Privacy Policy)
- Google Maps & Google Places API: Powers the Trail Finder map and nearby trail search. Your location query is sent directly from your browser to Google's servers. (Google Privacy Policy)
- Google AdSense: We may display advertisements provided by Google. Google uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our website or other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. (Google Ads Privacy)
- Google Fonts: We load fonts from Google's CDN. Google may log the request, but no personal data from our site is shared. (Google Fonts Privacy FAQ)
4. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
Because we do not collect any personal information from anyone, we inherently do not collect personal information from children under the age of 13. Our Service is safe for all ages and is fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
5. Your Privacy Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Under laws like the GDPR (European Union) and the CCPA (California, USA), you have the right to:
- Request access to any personal data we hold about you
- Request correction or deletion of your personal data
- Object to or restrict the processing of your personal data
- Data portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format
- Opt out of the sale of your personal data
Because we do not collect or store any of your data, there is nothing for us to provide, correct, or delete. You are already in full control. No action is required on your part to exercise these rights.
6. Data Security
Since we collect no personal data, there is no personal data at risk of a breach on our end. All data processing described in Section 2 occurs entirely within your own browser or is handled directly by the third-party services listed in Section 3, each of which maintains its own security standards.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
